Ground Mounted Solar Panels vs Roof Mount Solar Panel Systems

Two of the most common solar panel installation options are ground mounted solar panels and roof mount solar panel systems. Each of these installation systems can be beneficial depending on your roof, energy needs, and budget. Each has their unique advantages and challenges, so it’s important to weigh your options and make the most informed decision for your property’s solar energy setup. Not sure where to even begin researching to help you decide? We’ve got you covered with a complete guide to ground mounted solar panels vs roof mounted solar panels.

Ground Mounted Solar Panels vs Roof Mount Solar Panels

Choosing an installation method for your solar panel system is not one-size-fits-all. It depends on your specific energy needs, the characteristics of your property (how many trees or buildings you have, how much space you have, etc), your roof type and orientation, and of course… your budget. For homeowners, it can be overwhelming and a bit confusing to understand the differences in these two mounting systems and decide which is best for your property. That’s why we’re here – to break this down into simple terms so you can make the best choice for your home and energy needs.

Ground Mounted Solar Panels

Ground mounted solar panels are secured to a racking structure that is anchored into the ground with steel beams or metal posts. Ground mounted solar panels can be installed in open spaces or as carports over parking lots.

We love installing ground mounts when our client has the land on their property to do so. We have significantly cut down our cost on ground mounted solar arrays here at Blu Solar to make this a viable option for more clients.

Keep in mind, solar panels must be secured to a mounting structure to optimize energy production and prevent damage from weather conditions. They should not be placed directly on the ground.

Ground mounts are great for homeowners who don’t have an ideal roof in terms of the material used or the orientation, such as a north-facing roof.

Advantages of Ground Mounted Solar Panels

  • Optimal Energy Production: Solar panels can be positioned at the best angle and direction to ensure maximum sunlight exposure, leading to higher energy efficiency. The more sunlight the panel captures, the more energy it produces!
  • Easy Maintenance: Since the panels are at ground level, they are easier to clean, inspect, and repair. No crawling on the roof necessary!
  • No Roof Constraints: Ground mounts are ideal for those with limited roof space, shading issues, or structural concerns. If your roof isn’t perfect, no problem! You can still take advantage of solar energy with a ground mount.
  • Expandable: With ground mounted systems, it is easier to add additional panels if your energy needs grow. Simply expand your system for more energy!
  • No Detach & Reset Step: If there is a storm, you don’t have to worry about the Detach & Reset step of removing solar panels from your roof to repair it. With a ground mount system, there’s no need for this step. Roof repairs are unaffected by your solar panels.

Challenges of Ground Mounted Solar Panels

  • Higher Cost: Ground mounted solar panels are more expensive to install, as additional materials and labor are needed, such as racking systems, etc.
  • Land Use: To make ground mounted systems work, you’ll need access to significant space on your land, which may limit other property uses.
  • Permitting Challenges: Some areas have stricter zoning regulations and aesthetic restrictions for ground-mounted solar installations.

When Ground Mounted Solar Panels Are Best

  • Your roof is not south-facing.
  • You have enough open land with optimal sun exposure.
  • You want a system with maximum efficiency and easy maintenance.

Roof Mount Solar Panel Systems

Roof mount solar panel systems are the most common type of installation. With this system, the solar racking is attached directly on your roof, which then holds the solar panels. Roof mount solar panel systems can be installed on flat, sloped, metal, shingle, or rubber roofs. Learn more about roof mounted systems in this blog post.

Most homeowners don’t have the space to utilize a ground mount system, which makes a roof mount system the obvious choice for the majority of our clients.

Advantages of Roof Mount Solar Panel Systems

  • Lower Cost: A roof mount solar panel system is less expensive because it uses your existing roof as support, reducing the materials needed and labor costs. This option works with what you already have!
  • Space-Saving: Roof mount solar systems don’t take up valuable land space. This means more room for your family to enjoy your property!
  • Streamlined Installation: The installation process is typically faster and easier than ground mounted systems. We’re all about efficiency!

Challenges of Roof Mounted Solar Panels

    • Roof Limitations: Energy production and efficiency depends on the orientation, shading, and angle of your roof. Roof repairs may also be needed to make this system work. Additionally, if your roof needs repaired after the solar panels are installed, they may require temporary removal.
    • Accessibility Issues: Since the panels are on the roof, they are more difficult to clean and maintain due to their location and height.
  • Storm Damage & Roof Repairs: If a storm damages your roof and you have solar panels installed with a roof mount system, there’s an extra step required called Detach & Reset (D&R) before roof repairs can be made. This process is covered in your insurance claim and managed by your contractor and us. We’ll remove the solar panels, allow the roofers to replace the roof, and then reinstall the panels.

When Roof Mounted Solar Panels Are Best

  • You have limited space on your property.
  • Your roof is in good condition and has an optimal angle for solar energy.
  • You are looking for the most cost-effective and space-efficient option.

Ground Mount vs Roof Mount Solar Cost

If your property can support both ground mount and roof mount solar systems, the biggest deciding factor is cost. Ground mounted systems typically cost $1,000-$5,000 more than roof mounted systems. This is due to the extra racking materials, labor, and land preparation.

Roof mounted systems are more affordable and require fewer additional materials and labor.

Which Solar Panel Mount is Best For You?

The right solar panel mounting system depends on your property’s layout, your energy goals, and your budget.

If you’re worried about weather events, keep in mind that solar panels are incredibly hail-resistant and durable. In the last 4 years, despite several severe hailstorms, not a single one of our panels has broken.

If you have ample land space, need maximum energy production, or have roof limitations, choose ground mounted solar panels.

If you want a cost-effective solution that doesn’t take up yard space and fits well on your existing roof, especially if you have a south-facing roof in good condition, opt for roof mount solar panels.
