Do Solar Panels Work Immediately After Installation? | Solar Panel Installation Timeline

Investing in solar energy is an exciting step as a homeowner, and you’re likely eager to start generating your own electricity (and saving on utility bills) as soon as possible. But do solar panels work immediately after installation? What is the solar panel installation timeline?

The short answer is… no. The solar panel installation process isn’t a quick week-long or even month-long process. It involves multiple steps (including applications, paperwork, installation, approvals, and more) to get your solar system installed and powered on.

The actual installation of the solar panels actually takes the least amount of time – typically a few hours up to a full day. The applications and approvals are what takes the longest, and this waiting game can take up to 2 months alone.

From start to finish, the process takes about 2-6 months. Here at Blu Solar, we’re committed to making the entire solar panel installation process as smooth and quick as possible, and we average 2-4 months to get your solar systems producing energy for your home. We do all the hard work for you, and your direct involvement is minimal throughout the process. Don’t worry though – we’ll keep you updated on how things are moving along as we go!

Read on to learn more about the solar panel installation timeline, what happens after your panels are installed, and when you can expect your system to start powering your home.

Do Solar Panels Work Immediately After Installation?

No, solar panels don’t start working immediately after installation. The process of generating power from solar panels includes more than just mounting the panels to your roof. It requires utility approval and a few steps before they can be switched on and begin powering your home. Each of these “in-between” steps can take a good bit of time, which impacts how long it takes your system to be fully operational.

Understanding the Solar Panel Installation Process

After your solar panels are physically installed on your roof, there are a few key steps before they start producing power.

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect after installation:

Utility Approval and Inspections

After installation, your solar system must be inspected by county or city Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and approved by your utility company to ensure it meets safety and electrical standards. This is often the longest part of the process, as you must navigate scheduling with both the inspectors and utility company representatives.

Meter Installation

If your system includes solar net metering, your utility company may need to install a new meter that tracks energy usage and excess solar power sent back to the grid.

Permission to Operate (PTO)

After the inspections are complete and your system has passed, your utility company will issue a “Permission to Operate” (PTO), which gives you the green light to turn on your system.

Commissioning

Once the PTO is granted, we’ll schedule a time to test your system to ensure everything is working properly. Once we confirm everything is ready, we’ll switch on your system so you can start generating power.

How Long Is The Solar Panel Installation Timeline?

Between all of the inspections, approvals, and final tests, it will take on average 1 week to 2 months before your system is turned on. The timing of this depends on how long it takes the AHJ and utility company to get to your home for the inspection. Other factors such as permitting, installation complexity, and utility interconnection processes can also impact your home’s complete solar panel installation timeline.

To ensure your satisfaction during the solar process, Blu Solar will cover all of your solar payments until you have a 100% operable system.

We don’t want you paying for energy you aren’t producing yet!
